One of the largest lakes on the Piedmont, Kerr Lake covers approximately 50,000 acres and has a shoreline of 850 miles in North Carolina and Virginia. The man-made lake was created in 1953 when the Roanoke River was dammed to assist in flood control and to provide hydroelectric power. Another result was the creation of one of the largest, most popular outdoor recreation areas in the state. Kerr Lake State Recreation Area consists of 9 seperate rec areas spread out over 3,000 acres of land. Facilities at the rec areas include developed campgrounds, picnic areas, and boat ramps. The lake sees heavy recreational use, with boating and bass fishing the most popular activities. The lake is large enough that it rarely seems crowded. Several of the rec areas are open year-round, others closed during the winter months. Canoeing/Kayaking:Despite the presence of watercraft, and its status as one of the major recreational lakes in the state, Kerr Lake is not a bad choice for lake paddling. The lake is so big and has so many narrow coves and inlets, that it's possible to escape the bass boats and water skiers, at least for awhile. Boat ramps are plentiful. Fishing:Kerr Lake is one of the most highly regarded lakes for largemouth and striped bass fishing in NC. Tournaments are held here regularly during the spring and summer months. Other game fish frequently caught are catfish, sunfish, and crappie. In general, the best times for fishing are spring and fall. Although most fishing is done from boats, most of the rec areas and campgrounds have shorelines with at least some portions suitable for casting. You can fish on the lake with either a NC or VA fishing license. Hiking:There are short trails at Satterwhite Point, County Line, and Bullocksville Official
